What is biblical stewardship in business?
Biblical stewardship in business is managing time, talent, money, and relationships as resources entrusted by God, to be used faithfully for His purposes and the good of others, rather than as personal property to be maximized for self.
The Biblical Foundation
The earth and everything in it belong to the Lord. The business owner who grasps this does not see the company as ultimate ownership but as entrusted ground. Stewardship begins with acknowledging the true Owner.
Stewards are measured by faithfulness. Paul states plainly that what is required of a steward is faithfulness, not impressive returns. A business may grow or shrink; the charge remains consistent.
Stewardship is comprehensive. It includes how you pay employees, how you treat customers, how you spend your hours, and how you steward your family and soul. Building beyond the business means accounting for all of it.
Scripture References
Quotations from the ESV Bible.
“The earth is the Lord's and the fullness thereof, the world and those who dwell therein,”
“Moreover, it is required of stewards that they be found faithful.”
“As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God's varied grace.”
“One who is faithful in a very little is also faithful in much, and one who is dishonest in a very little is also dishonest in much.”
“Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men,”
Practical Applications
- Acknowledge God as the true owner of your business in prayer and practice.
- Steward your team as people, not as resources to be spent.
- Manage time and money with the same intentionality.
- Evaluate your stewardship by faithfulness, not only by growth.
An Important Distinction
Stewardship is not stinginess or the rejection of profit. Honest profit is a provision that enables generosity and provision for one's household. The error is treating resources as ends in themselves rather than as entrusted means.
