Biblical Stewardship

What does the Bible teach about money and contentment?

The Bible teaches that money is a tool to be stewarded, not a treasure to be loved. Contentment comes from godliness and trust in God's provision, not from the accumulation of wealth. The love of money, not money itself, is the danger.

The Biblical Foundation

Godliness with contentment is great gain. Paul reminds believers that they brought nothing into the world and can take nothing out, and that with food and clothing they can be content.

The love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. The warning is precise: it is the craving, not the currency, that leads people away from faith and into ruin.

Contentment is learned. Paul wrote that he had learned to be content in plenty and in want, through Christ who strengthened him. Contentment is a grace practiced, not a circumstance achieved.

Scripture References

Quotations from the ESV Bible.

“But godliness with contentment is great gain, for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world. But if we have food and clothing, with these we will be content.”
1 Timothy 6:6-8 (ESV)
“For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs.”
1 Timothy 6:10 (ESV)
“Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need.”
Philippians 4:11-12 (ESV)
“Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, because he has said, 'I will never leave you nor forsake you.'”
Hebrews 13:5 (ESV)
“He who loves money will not be satisfied with money, nor he who loves wealth with his income; this also is vanity.”
Ecclesiastes 5:10 (ESV)

Practical Applications

  • Steward money as a tool, not treasure it as a master.
  • Practice contentment in both abundance and scarcity.
  • Give generously to break money's hold on the heart.
  • Trust God's presence and provision more than your balance.

An Important Distinction

Contentment is not laziness or the refusal to earn. Scripture commends diligent work and wise provision. The distinction is the heart's attachment: working diligently while trusting God, rather than loving and depending on money for security.
