What does Scripture teach about ambition?
Scripture does not condemn ambition; it redirects it. Ambition for self, status, and dominance is warned against, while ambition to honor God, serve others, and do good is commended. The difference is the aim and the object of the ambition.
The Biblical Foundation
Paul commends aspiration to noble tasks, even the office of overseer, calling it a worthy desire. Ambition directed toward serving God and His people is good.
At the same time, selfish ambition is condemned. James warns that jealousy and selfish ambition produce disorder and every vile practice. Ambition that seeks only personal elevation is a snare.
The redirecting of ambition is seen in Christ, who came not to be served but to serve. The greatest in the kingdom is the servant. Ambition is sanctified when it bends toward service.
Scripture References
Quotations from the ESV Bible.
“The saying is trustworthy: If anyone aspires to the office of overseer, he desires a noble task.”
“For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice.”
“For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
“Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves.”
“and thus I make it my ambition to preach the gospel, not where Christ has already been named, lest I build on someone else's foundation,”
Practical Applications
- Examine whether your ambition serves Christ and others or only self.
- Pursue growth that enables greater service and generosity.
- Reject the comparison that fuels jealousy and discontent.
- Let humility, not self promotion, mark your striving.
An Important Distinction
Sanctified ambition is not passivity. Setting goals, building, and striving are good when aimed at God's glory and neighbor's good. The error is ambition that makes self the center and success the savior.
